How to Install Mods: Complete Beginner's Guide (2026)

Everything you need to start modding PC games — from choosing a mod manager to fixing common issues.

1. Choose a Mod Manager

A mod manager handles downloading, installing, and organizing mods. Don't install mods manually — use a manager.

Vortex — Best for beginners. Works with 100+ games. One-click installs, automatic load order sorting, mod conflict detection. Download Vortex
Mod Organizer 2 — Advanced. Virtual file system keeps game folder clean. Best for Bethesda games (Skyrim, Fallout). Steeper learning curve but more control.

2. Set Up Your Modding Environment

  1. Install the mod manager — Download Vortex or MO2 from their official sites.
  2. Link your Nexus Mods account — Both managers connect to Nexus for one-click downloads.
  3. Set game paths — Point the manager to your game installation folder.
  4. Install required tools first — Most games need a script extender or mod loader before any mods work. Check each game's page on discovermods for specifics.

3. Install Your First Mod

  1. Find a mod on discovermods or Nexus Mods
  2. Click "Mod Manager Download" (if available) or "Manual Download"
  3. In Vortex: drag the downloaded file into Vortex, or it auto-detects Nexus downloads
  4. Click "Install" then "Enable"
  5. If using MO2: double-click the mod in the Downloads tab, then check the box in the left pane

4. Understand Load Order

Mods load in a specific order. If two mods change the same thing, the one loading last wins. This is the #1 cause of mod conflicts.

  • LOOT — Built into Vortex and available for MO2. Automatically sorts your load order.
  • Rules of thumb: Bug fixes first → Core overhauls → Graphics/textures → Gameplay changes → Patches last
  • Read mod descriptions — Authors often specify where their mod should go in the load order.

5. Common Issues & Fixes

Game won't launch

Disable all mods, then re-enable one at a time to find the culprit. Check that you have the required script extender/dependencies installed.

Missing textures (purple/black objects)

Texture mod wasn't installed correctly. Reinstall it. If using MO2, check that archives are enabled in the Archives tab.

Mods conflicting

Vortex shows conflict lightning bolts. MO2 shows lightning bolt icons with +/- symbols. Resolve by adjusting load order or choosing which mod's files win.
