Stardew Valley Modding Guide 2026

Stardew Valley has one of the cleanest modding setups of any game. One tool — SMAPI — handles everything. Here's how to get started.

🔧 SMAPI — Stardew Modding API

The one and only tool you need. SMAPI loads mods, provides APIs, checks for updates, intercepts errors, and fixes saves automatically. Install once, then just drop mods in the Mods folder. 29M+ downloads. Works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck.

📦 Content Patcher

Most Stardew mods require Content Patcher. It's a SMAPI mod that loads content changes (new crops, NPCs, maps) without replacing game files. Install this right after SMAPI.

Installation

  1. Install Stardew Valley and launch once
  2. Download SMAPI from smapi.io
  3. Run the installer (double-click on Windows)
  4. Launch via StardewModdingAPI.exe
  5. Download Content Patcher from Nexus
  6. Extract Content Patcher into the Mods folder
  7. Start downloading mods!

All mods go in Stardew Valley/Mods/. Vortex can automate this but manual install is simple enough for most users.
